Peace Education for Schools Programs – Fostering a Culture of Peace in Nigerian Schools

At Peace Education and Practice Network (PEPNET), we believe that sustainable peace begins with education. Our Peace Education for Schools Programs are designed to embed peace values and conflict resolution skills into the curricula of educational institutions at all levels, empowering young people to be agents of peace in their communities and beyond. With an ambitious goal to reach over 5 million students by 2025, PEPNET is dedicated to shaping a generation of peace-conscious individuals through innovative and impactful educational initiatives.

Peace Education for Secondary Schools (PESS) Project

Peace Education for Secondary Schools (PESS) Project is an innovative initiative by PEPNET aimed at integrating peace education into the secondary school curriculum in Nigeria.

Launched to promote awareness and understanding of peacebuilding principles among students, the program equips educators with the tools and resources necessary to teach conflict resolution, human rights, and social justice.

The Peace Education for Secondary Schools Sensitization Project (PESSSP) Pilot, part of the PESS Program, was successfully implemented at Newton National Secondary School in Mpape, Abuja, in June 2024.

This groundbreaking initiative aimed to introduce peace education into the school’s curriculum, equipping students with essential conflict resolution skills and promoting a culture of peace. The pilot project is a significant step towards integrating peace education into secondary schools across Nigeria.

PESS-MANUAL-Cover

The Peace Education for Secondary Schools (PESS) Manual -and Handbook- is a comprehensive resource designed to equip educators with the tools needed to teach peace concepts in secondary schools.

Developed by PEPNET, it covers key areas such as conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and human security. The manual aims to foster a culture of peace among young people by providing practical lessons and activities that promote peaceful behavior and effective conflict management.

Peace Education for Higher Institutions Program (PEHIP)

The Peace Education for Higher Institutions Program (PEHIP) aims to strengthen academic institutions in peace education and development. Its pilot program at Newgate University, Minna, Niger State, held via Zoom in June 2023, certified over 40 participants. Another session in July 2024 featured facilitators from University of Jos, Newgate University, and Veritas University, covering themes such as conflict analysis, migration, gender, and practical peace skills.

PEPNET is also engaging with stakeholders, including the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies and the Sultan Maccido Institute at the University of Abuja, to enhance institutional capacity for peacebuilding. This collaboration aims to foster innovative peace education strategies, promote research, and empower students to become active agents of change in their communities and beyond.

PEPNET recently visited Dr. Tochukwu Okeke, the Head of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies at the University of Abuja. During the meeting, PEPNET presented the Peace Education for Secondary Schools (PESS) manual, highlighting its significance in advancing peace education across Nigeria.

PEHIP FLyer

PEPNET successfully implemented the Peace Education for Higher Institutions Program (PEHIP) in July 2024, equipping participants with essential skills in conflict analysis and peacebuilding through expert-led sessions across multiple universities.

 

Peace Media Programs

PEPNET’s Peace Media Programs include Peace Zone, a KAFTAN TV initiative that aired over 24 episodes from February to July 2023, addressing conflict situations in Northern Nigeria and impacting over 500,000 viewers directly and an estimated 1 million indirectly. Another program, The Debate Arena, focuses on peace and development issues, with pilot sessions conducted via Zoom on May 5 and 20, 2024. This initiative aims to expand onto popular TV platforms, targeting over 5 million viewers to foster dialogue and awareness on critical peace-related topics.
