Recent Developments from Peace Education and Practice Network (PEPNET)

Over the past weeks, PEPNET has made significant strides in advancing peace education, community engagement, and strategic collaborations, both locally and globally. PEPNET Community Connect with Peace Catalyst International In June, we hosted a special edition of PEPNET Community Connect in collaboration with Peace Catalyst International (PCI). The session featured our very own Executive Director, Amb. Moses ABOLADE, and Bryan Carey from PCI, with moderation by Barrister Aysher. The interactive dialogue reinforced the importance of cross-organizational learning and collaboration. Given its success and positive feedback, PEPNET will now host this community connect series bi-monthly, with the next edition scheduled for August. GPPAC Engagement and Regional Presence PEPNET also played a key role in GPPAC’s (Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict) monthly Community Series. Our team coordinated and moderated the session, marking a strong appearance as a member of both GPPAC Nigeria and GPPAC West Africa. These roles are vital in amplifying grassroots voices and shaping regional peacebuilding policies. PEPNET was featured in the “Peace Prospects” Magazine by the Peace Leadership Collaborative. You can find our contributions on pages 30 and 63 of the publication. You can have access to the magazine here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZazznfRz8tEbrDRha3TLcSUSh5iRYA6g/view?usp=drive_link   Additionally, PEPNET was selected to join the Youth Democratic Cohort (2025/2026), further affirming our commitment to strengthening democratic values through youth engagement. New Partnerships and Program Highlights Our partnership with the Graduate Research Clinic (GRC) led to the successful Roundtable in Honour of ACGN Ibiba Odili, hosted by Amb. Oluwasegun Funmilayo Ayodele. It was a high-impact gathering centered on ethical research and gender-inclusive peacebuilding. We were also proud to partner with the Daniel Damilare Peace Foundation and Adeyinka Makarios to deliver a targeted peace education session for nurses at the College of Nursing, Ilorin, Kwara State. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. PEPNET joined forces with Rotr. Melody Chimkwesiri as part of her Pass It On Project, a step-down initiative under the SHAPPE Fellowship Programme. The project took us to Junior Secondary School, Gwarimpa, where we engaged students on Promoting Peacebuilding through Drug Abuse Prevention. The session was powerful, and the enthusiasm of the students reflected the importance of this grassroots intervention. In June, Amb. Moses ABOLADE officially joined Peace Catalyst International (PCI) as a Team Member (Contractor), serving as a Peacebuilding Consultant, Facilitator, and Educator. Participants in this training are automatically eligible for free participation in PEMAT 2025, our signature Fellowship-style peace education and management program. Diplomatic Conference with CEPASD In collaboration with the Centre for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development (CEPASD), PEPNET co-hosted a Diplomatic Conference aimed at equipping young leaders with global competencies in diplomacy, peace, and multilateral engagement. PEPNET’s Engagement with AAIPSDS and Peace Education Facilitation in Minna, Niger State

The Peace Education and Practice Network (PEPNET) team, led by Executive Director Amb. Moses Abolade and Programme Assistant Jonathan Saba, visited Minna, Niger State, on April 9, 2025, to participate in the ongoing Peace Education Workshop organized by the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS). LinkedIn Upon arrival, the PEPNET team was warmly received by AAIPSDS representatives, including Programme Manager David Kemedubei, Partnerships, Advocacy & Grant Officer Elijah Akinola Earnest, and Research, Monitoring & Evaluation Officer Joseph Shiru. A dinner meeting that evening provided an opportunity for both organizations to discuss potential long-term partnerships aimed at strengthening peace infrastructures across Niger State. On April 10, 2025, Amb. Abolade facilitated a session introducing approximately 50 secondary school teachers to strategies for establishing peace clubs in schools. The session covered key areas such as understanding the educators’ role in peacebuilding, engaging diverse school contexts, effective conflict management strategies, and methods for monitoring and evaluating peace education activities.  The training was impactful, with participants expressing appreciation for the practical knowledge shared. A representative from the Niger State Ministry of Education attended on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Education, commending the quality of the training and expressing interest in future collaborations. This engagement also marks the beginning of a promising partnership between PEPNET and the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS). Both organizations are committed to working collaboratively to address the challenges of student violence that have led to the closure of some schools in Niger State. Through strategic interventions and the establishment of peace education initiatives, we aim to create an environment conducive to reopening these schools and fostering a culture of peace. PEPNET is enthusiastic about collaborating with AAIPSDS on subsequent phases of the peace education programme, with the shared goal of transforming conflict situations and promoting sustainable peace across the state. This engagement reinforces PEPNET’s commitment to expanding access to peace education and nurturing young peacebuilders through education and advocacy. As Amb. Abolade stated during his session, “With our collaborative mindset, we will break the cycle of student violence in Minna, Niger State, and throughout the nation.” PEPNET remains dedicated to creatively teaching peace for development.
