At the Peace Education and Practice Network (PEPNET), education is not only a tool for learning, but it is also a pathway for transformation.
This belief continues to find expression through the Peace Education for Secondary Schools (PESS) Programme, a structured initiative designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to understand conflict, build inner peace, and contribute to peaceful communities.
Since 2024, PEPNET has been actively implementing the PESS Programme across diverse learning environments, from Newton National College in Mpape, Abuja, to Amagai Community in Mpape, extending to Merosa in Apo, Abuja, among others. In each of these spaces, we have worked closely with both students and educators to embed peace education within everyday learning and interaction.
Introducing Peace as a Way of Thinking
The PESS Programme goes beyond conventional teaching. It introduces students to a new way of thinking about themselves, their relationships, and the conflicts around them.
Through the PESS Handbook, students are guided to:
* Reflect on their emotions and personal experiences
* Understand the root causes of conflict
* Develop skills in dialogue, empathy, and nonviolent communication
* Analyse situations critically and respond constructively
At the same time, teachers are equipped with the PESS Manual, enabling them to deliver peace education in a structured, practical, and engaging way that aligns with classroom realities.
A Shift in Perspective
Over time, the impact has become evident.
What began as a learning experience has gradually evolved into a meaningful shift in mindset among students. Across these different locations, many are now more reflective, more self-aware, and more intentional in how they relate with others.
Students are not only learning about peace, but they are:
* Finding inner calm and emotional awareness
* Developing the ability to analyse conflict situations
* Choosing dialogue over reaction
* Challenging cycles of violence within their peer environments
This transformation is subtle but powerful. It reflects a move from reaction to reflection, and from conflict escalation to constructive engagement.
Learning Through Interaction and Practice
A defining strength of the PESS Programme has been its interactive approach.
Sessions are designed to be participatory, allowing students to:
* Share experiences
* Engage in discussions
* Practice real-life conflict scenarios
* Learn from one another
This creates a safe and dynamic learning environment where students are not passive recipients, but active participants in their own growth.
Breaking the Cycle
In many communities, patterns of conflict are often repeated across generations.
The PESS Programme is intentionally designed to interrupt this cycle.
By equipping young people early with the tools to understand and manage conflict, PEPNET is contributing to the development of a generation that can:
* Respond differently
* Think critically
* Act consciously
This is how long-term change begins, not through isolated interventions, but through consistent, value-based education across communities.
Looking Ahead
As PEPNET continues to deepen its engagement across these locations and expand the reach of the PESS Programme, the focus remains clear:
👉 To institutionalise peace education and make it an integral part of how young people learn, think, and relate.
The introduction of the PESS Manual and Handbook marks an important step in this direction, providing both educators and students with the tools needed to sustain this transformation.
Conclusion
The experiences across Mpape and Apo demonstrate a simple but powerful truth:
👉 When young people are equipped with the right knowledge and tools, they can rethink conflict, reshape relationships, and redefine their future.
At PEPNET, this is the change we are committed to: one classroom, one community, one conversation at a time.
